I have been delighted to be involved in a Wellcome funded Arts Award with the Lydiard Park Education Team and Sixth Sense Theatre Company. The project is called ‘Science and Superstition’ and the central activity, a play telling the story of Lady Johanna St John (1631-1704) and her ‘booke’, was performed this summer in the walled garden at Lydiard Park. Lady Johanna was a well known society hostess and is now distinguished as a herbalist whose collection of remedies, referred to as her “Booke” now forms part of the Wellcome Trust’s collections. ‘Science and Superstition’ tells the story of her extraordinary life by extensive research into her personal correspondence and her medicinal writings. The play used her story and narrative from the history of medicine in a playful and entertaining manner and used the gorgeous walled garden as a wonderful backdrop.
